Pinhole Camera could have been in use while Egyptians where constructing the pyramids. The camera obscura was already known and the chemistry was as fare advanced enough to realize light sensible materials, but the idea of connecting this knowledge didn't come to anyone.

Even in our modern cameras the camera obscura laws are valid: Light penetrates into a dark room through a small aperture. The is an upside-down projection of the outside world on the opposite wall of the aperture. In cameras there are, of course lenses, to improve the sharpness, but, as some of the following photographs show: It is possible to make photography with nothing else than a Danish Butter Cookie Box, a small "pinhole" and a piece of film or photographic paper.

Those  pictures have been taken in the Esch-sur-Alzette Railway station.
